Is your refrigerator not cooling, leaking water or running nonstop? Our factory-trained technicians diagnose and repair fridge problems fast — often the same day — so your food stays cold and safe.
A broken refrigerator can't wait. When your fridge stops cooling, every hour puts your groceries at risk. MSJ Appliance Repair provides fast, in-home refrigerator repair throughout the greater Sacramento area, including Natomas, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Citrus Heights, Folsom, Elk Grove, Yuba City and Marysville.
We repair French door, side-by-side, top-freezer, bottom-freezer, built-in and counter-depth refrigerators from all major brands. From defrost system failures and faulty fan motors to leaking water lines, bad thermistors and control board problems, we find the real cause, explain the cost up front and use OEM parts whenever available.
Here are the refrigerator problems we see most often, what usually causes them and how our technicians repair them.
01
Refrigerator not cooling, but the freezer works
Common causes: Usually an airflow problem. A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control lets ice block the evaporator coil. A bad evaporator fan motor or stuck air damper can also stop cold air from reaching the fresh food section.
How we fix it: We check the evaporator coil, fan and damper, test the defrost system and replace the failed part.
02
Refrigerator and freezer both warm
Common causes: Common causes include dirty condenser coils, a failed condenser fan motor, a faulty start relay or overload, inverter or control board failure, or a sealed-system problem with the compressor.
How we fix it: We test the compressor circuit, fans and controls to pinpoint the failure before recommending a repair.
03
Refrigerator leaking water on the floor
Common causes: A clogged or frozen defrost drain, cracked drain pan, leaking water inlet valve, damaged water supply line or a faulty water filter housing.
How we fix it: We trace the leak to its source, clear the drain line and replace damaged valves, lines or housings.
04
Water dispenser not working
Common causes: A frozen water line in the door, clogged water filter, failed water inlet valve, bad dispenser switch or low household water pressure.
How we fix it: We thaw and inspect the water line, test the valve and dispenser controls and restore normal flow.
05
Refrigerator making loud noises
Common causes: Buzzing, clicking, rattling or grinding often comes from a worn evaporator or condenser fan motor, a fan blade hitting ice, a failing start relay or a struggling compressor.
How we fix it: We identify where the noise starts and replace worn motors or components before they fail completely.
06
Refrigerator running constantly
Common causes: Dirty condenser coils, worn door gaskets, a faulty thermistor or temperature control, a failing defrost system or low refrigerant.
How we fix it: We check sealing, airflow and temperature sensors so the fridge cycles normally again.
07
Frost or ice buildup inside the fridge
Common causes: Torn or loose door seals, doors that don't close fully, or a defrost system that isn't melting frost off the evaporator coil.
How we fix it: We replace worn gaskets, adjust door alignment and repair the defrost system.
08
Food freezing in the fresh food section
Common causes: An air damper stuck open, a faulty thermistor, a temperature control problem or food blocking the cold air vent.
How we fix it: We test the damper and sensors and recalibrate or replace the faulty control.
09
Refrigerator clicking but not starting
Common causes: A failed compressor start relay or overload protector, a control board problem, or a compressor that can't start.
How we fix it: We test the start components and compressor and explain your options honestly.
Before You Call
Quick refrigerator checks you can try
Check the temperature settings — the fridge should be around 37°F and the freezer at 0°F.
Make sure the doors close fully and the gaskets seal. Food packages can hold a door open.
Keep the vents inside the fridge and freezer clear so cold air can circulate.
Unplug the fridge and clean dust from the condenser coils (underneath or behind the unit).
If the water dispenser is slow, replace the water filter and check the supply valve.
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning coils or moving it. Never try to repair sealed-system (refrigerant) components yourself.

Questions & Answers
Refrigerator Repair FAQ
Why is my refrigerator not cooling but the freezer is cold?
The freezer and fridge usually share cold air from one evaporator coil. If the defrost system fails and the coil freezes over, or the evaporator fan or air damper stops working, cold air can't reach the fresh food section. A technician can test these parts and fix the actual cause.
How long will food stay safe if my refrigerator stops working?
According to USDA food safety guidance, a refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours if the door stays closed. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours (about 24 hours if half full). Keep the doors closed and call for service as soon as possible.
Is it worth repairing my refrigerator?
Many refrigerator problems — fans, defrost parts, water valves, relays and sensors — are affordable repairs. We diagnose the problem and give you an upfront price so you can decide whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
