Here are the garbage disposal problems we see most often, what usually causes them and how our technicians repair them.
Common causes: The flywheel is jammed by a hard object, or the motor is seized. Continued humming can overheat the motor.
How we fix it: We free the jam safely, check the motor and remove anything stuck in the grinding chamber.
Common causes: A tripped reset button, tripped breaker or GFCI outlet, faulty wall or air switch, loose wiring or a burned-out motor.
How we fix it: We test power, switches and wiring and restore operation.
Common causes: Leaks at the top usually come from the sink flange; at the side, from the dishwasher inlet or drain connection; and at the bottom, from failed internal seals.
How we fix it: We find the leak and reseal connections — and let you know if the unit itself needs to be replaced.
Common causes: Food buildup in the disposal or drain line, grease, fibrous food waste or a clogged drain trap.
How we fix it: We clear the disposal and connected drain and check for blockages.
Common causes: Silverware, bottle caps, bones or other hard objects in the grinding chamber, or loose mounting hardware.
How we fix it: We remove foreign objects and tighten or repair the mounting assembly.

Humming usually means the motor is getting power but the flywheel is jammed. Turn off the power, press the reset button and try freeing the jam with the hex wrench on the bottom. If it still hums, the motor may be seized.
Most disposals have a small red reset button on the bottom of the unit under the sink. Press it after the motor has cooled for a few minutes.
Leaks at the sink flange or hose connections can usually be repaired. A leak from the bottom of the unit often means internal seals have failed, and replacement is typically the better option.
Avoid grease and oil, bones, fruit pits, eggshells in large amounts, coffee grounds in large amounts, and fibrous foods like celery and corn husks.
