Troubleshooting

Common dryer problems we fix

Here are the dryer problems we see most often, what usually causes them and how our technicians repair them.

01

Dryer not heating

Common causes: On electric dryers: a blown thermal fuse, failed heating element, bad high-limit or cycling thermostat, or one side of the double breaker tripped. On gas dryers: a weak igniter, faulty flame sensor or failed gas valve coils.

How we fix it: We test the heating circuit, fuses and thermostats — and check the vent that often caused the failure.

02

Dryer taking too long to dry

Common causes: A clogged dryer vent or lint screen, a crushed transition hose, a faulty moisture sensor or a heating system that isn't reaching full temperature.

How we fix it: We check airflow and heating components and fix what's slowing the dryer down.

03

Dryer drum not turning

Common causes: A broken drive belt, failed idler pulley, worn drum rollers or a failing drive motor.

How we fix it: We replace the belt, pulley, rollers or motor so the drum tumbles smoothly.

04

Dryer won't start

Common causes: A faulty door switch, blown thermal fuse, broken start switch, failed drive motor or control board problem.

How we fix it: We test each part of the start circuit and replace the faulty component.

05

Dryer squeaking, thumping or grinding

Common causes: Worn drum rollers, a failing idler pulley, worn drum glides or bearings, or an object caught in the drum.

How we fix it: We identify the source of the noise and replace worn parts.

06

Dryer overheating or burning smell

Common causes: A restricted vent, lint buildup inside the cabinet or a faulty cycling thermostat. Stop using the dryer — this can be a fire hazard.

How we fix it: We clean lint from the cabinet, test thermostats and inspect the vent system.

07

Dryer shuts off too early

Common causes: A dirty or faulty moisture sensor, overheating that trips a thermal safety device, or a timer or control board issue.

How we fix it: We clean or replace sensors and fix the overheating cause.

08

Thermal fuse keeps blowing

Common causes: Almost always a sign of restricted airflow from a clogged or crushed dryer vent. Replacing the fuse alone won't solve the problem.

How we fix it: We replace the fuse and address the vent restriction — or schedule a dryer vent cleaning.

Before You Call

Quick dryer checks you can try

  1. Clean the lint screen before every load.
  2. Go outside and check that the dryer vent flap opens and air flows strongly while the dryer runs.
  3. For electric dryers, check both halves of the double-pole breaker in your electrical panel.
  4. Make sure the door closes firmly — a worn latch can stop the dryer from starting.
  5. Avoid overloading the drum, which reduces airflow and drying performance.

Safety first: If you smell gas, don't operate any switches — leave the home and call PG&E or 911 from a safe place. If you notice a burning smell, stop using the dryer and unplug it.

Questions & Answers

Dryer Repair FAQ

Why is my dryer running but not heating?

On electric dryers, the most common causes are a blown thermal fuse, failed heating element or tripped breaker. On gas dryers, a worn igniter or failed gas valve coils are common. A clogged vent is often the underlying cause of the failure.

Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry clothes?

Restricted airflow is the most common reason — a clogged lint screen, dryer vent or crushed transition hose. A failing heating component or moisture sensor can also cause long dry times.

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

A dryer vent should typically be cleaned at least once a year, and more often for large households or long vent runs. Clean the lint screen before every load.

Do you repair gas dryers?
