Troubleshooting

Common oven problems we fix

Here are the oven problems we see most often, what usually causes them and how our technicians repair them.

01

Oven not heating

Common causes: On electric ovens: a burned-out bake or broil element, failed temperature sensor, thermal fuse or control board. On gas ovens: a weak igniter that glows but doesn't light the burner, or a failed gas safety valve.

How we fix it: We test the heating components and controls and replace the failed part.

02

Oven temperature inaccurate or uneven baking

Common causes: A faulty oven temperature sensor, a weak element or igniter, a worn door gasket, a convection fan problem or an oven that needs calibration.

How we fix it: We test actual oven temperature, replace faulty sensors or elements and calibrate the oven.

03

Gas stove burner won't light

Common causes: Clogged burner ports, a wet or dirty igniter, a misaligned burner cap, a failed spark module or a faulty igniter switch.

How we fix it: We clean burners, test the ignition system and replace faulty igniters, switches or modules.

04

Burner igniter keeps clicking

Common causes: Moisture from spills or cleaning, a shorted igniter switch or a failing spark module.

How we fix it: We dry and test the ignition system and replace faulty switches or modules.

05

Oven won't turn on or display is blank

Common causes: A tripped breaker, blown thermal fuse, failed control board or power supply problem.

How we fix it: We test power and controls and repair the cause.

06

Oven door won't unlock after self-clean

Common causes: A failed door lock motor or switch, or a control board issue. The high heat of a self-clean cycle can also blow a thermal fuse.

How we fix it: We safely unlock the door and replace the lock assembly, fuse or control.

07

Broiler not working

Common causes: A burned-out broil element, a failed broil igniter on gas ovens, or a control problem.

How we fix it: We test and replace the broil element, igniter or control.

08

Convection fan not working

Common causes: A failed convection fan motor, convection element or control board relay.

How we fix it: We test the fan circuit and replace the failed part.

09

Control panel or touchpad not responding

Common causes: A failed membrane touchpad, control lock turned on, or a faulty electronic control board.

How we fix it: We test the keypad and board and replace what's failed.

Before You Call

Quick oven checks you can try

  1. Make sure the oven isn't in timed-bake, delay-start or Sabbath mode, and set the clock after a power outage.
  2. Check the breaker — electric ranges use a double-pole breaker.
  3. Remove, clean and dry gas burner caps and make sure they sit flat.
  4. Use an oven thermometer to see how far off the temperature really is.
  5. Check whether the control lock is turned on.

Safety first: If you smell gas, don't turn on lights or appliances. Leave the home and call PG&E or 911 from a safe location. Never try to repair gas valves or gas lines yourself.

Questions & Answers

Oven & Range Repair FAQ

Why is my electric oven not heating?

A burned-out bake element is the most common cause. A failed temperature sensor, thermal fuse or control board can also stop the oven from heating.

My gas oven igniter glows but the oven won't light. Why?

A gas oven igniter must draw enough current to open the gas safety valve. As igniters weaken with age they can still glow but not open the valve, so the burner never lights. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it.

Is it safe to use the self-cleaning feature?

Self-clean cycles run at very high temperatures and can occasionally cause a thermal fuse, door lock or control board to fail, especially on older ovens. If your oven stops working after self-clean, we can diagnose and repair it.

Do you repair wall ovens and dual-fuel ranges?

Yes. We repair single and double wall ovens, dual-fuel ranges, gas and electric ranges, convection ovens and more.

Do you offer same-day oven repair?

Yes. Same-day oven and range repair is available in Sacramento and nearby areas. Call (916) 743-3279.
